About RENA Community Center, Mayor Hemminger’s fundraising beneficiary
The Rogers-Eubanks Neighborhood, a historically African-American community with origins dating back to the 1700s, faced a significant challenge in 1972 when the Chapel Hill Board of Commissioners chose the area to host the Orange County Regional Landfill. Despite promises of recreational facilities and increased infrastructure, these were never actualized, and the community spent nearly four decades fighting the environmental and health effects of the landfill.
In 2007, the neighborhood of approximately 85 households formalized their efforts by founding the Rogers-Eubanks Neighborhood Association (RENA). As a community-organizing group, RENA aimed to gather, share resources, and develop programs for the neighborhood. This dream became a reality in the summer of 2010 when the RENA Center opened its doors, offering activity and workshop opportunities for youth, adults, and families. These activities focus on improving basic academics, education, environmental awareness, overall health, and community relationships. Further expanding its reach, the new Rogers Road Community Center opened in December 2014.
Recognizing RENA’s vital role in the community, Mayor Pam Hemminger has selected the RENA Community Center as a beneficiary for the Community Builder Award event this year. A portion of the proceeds will support RENA’s continued efforts to create a more just and vital Chapel Hill community.
About American Friends of NATAL, the Robboys’ fundraising beneficiary
American Friends of NATAL proudly supports NATAL – Israel Trauma and Resiliency Center, an organization founded in 1998 by social activist Jude Yovel Recanati and psychiatrist Dr. Yossi Hadar. NATAL was established in order to support those affected by trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Israel. Since its inception, NATAL has offered hope, healing, and strength to Israelis in their greatest times of need, providing round-the-clock care and support and transforming lives.
NATAL’s mission is to be Israel’s leading trauma-focused organization, providing comprehensive services to individuals, families, and communities impacted by war, terror, and violence. These services include a confidential helpline, a clinical unit serving over 3,000 patients weekly, community resilience workshops, individual therapy, and support groups tailored to diverse populations. Furthermore, NATAL conducts public education campaigns and provides specialized training to professionals such as first responders, educators, and healthcare workers. A portion of the proceeds from this event will support NATAL’s ever-important work.
